Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Padma Angmo visits GDC Zanskar

Kargil, May 10, 2024: The Commissioner/ Secretary, Higher Education/Technical Education and Social & Tribal Welfare Department of UT Ladakh paid a visit to Degree College,Zanskar on 9th May, 2024. She was accompanied by Additional Secretary, Higher Education, Imteeaz Kacho, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Zanskar, Romil Singh Donk and Director, College Affairs Tashi Ldawa.

Principal of the College Mohd. Ishaq and faculty members received and welcomed the guests with traditional Khataqs. In his welcome speech, the Principal highlighted the achievements of the college. In her speech, Palzom, a college student, highlighted the opportunities and facilities being provided by the college and also demanded more skill courses, educational tours outside Ladakh and student exchange programs for the benefit of Ladakh the college’s students.

In her address, the Commissioner/Secretary expressed satisfaction over the improvements made by the college. She also spoke about the ongoing projects of the college and urged for their early completion.

A Zanskari song and cultural dance performance were also showcased by the students. An interaction session with the students was also conducted during which students raised their issues and sought early resolution. An interactive meeting regarding academics and other subjects were held with faculty and staff.

On the occasion, the second volume of the College’s annual magazine (Shesrap) was released by the Commissioner/ Secretary in presence of the other officers. She spoke at length about the contents of the magazine and expressed her satisfaction over its quality.

Later, she inspected the Model Exhibition by students wherein they demonstrated models on themes like drip irrigation in green house, integrated farming, Zanskar bio-resources and water harvesting and ground water recharge. She then inaugurated Intra-Mural Table Tennis and Volleyball tournaments.

Subsequently, the Commissioner/Secretary inaugurated the Graphic Designer and Hand Embroidery Skill Labs. While asserting the importance of skills, the Commissioner/ Secretary encouraged students to familiarize themselves with skill courses in order to achieve more employability and to create their own skill-oriented start-ups.

She also inspected the ongoing construction projects in the College Campus. She thoroughly examined the quality and progress of work in the Science Block, Boys & Girls Hostels, Residential Quarters and Indoor Sports Complex. She gave directions for regular supervision by the executing agency i.e. PWD-Zanskar with the specific instruction that every building must be winter friendly considering the harsh climatic condition of Zanskar.
